Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through the aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. In this role, she launched her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
